Reflecting on my journey through Full Sail University’s New Media Journalism Master’s Degree Program, it's remarkable to see how it aligned with my original objectives and exceeded my expectations as it now comes to an end. Initially, I started the journey with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of learning and mastering digital content while strengthening my current journalism skills. Carrying these skills onto law school and ultimately politics. Through interacting with peers, engaging with the course content, and receiving valuable guidance from my instructors, I've not only achieved this goal but also learned skills and made contacts that extend beyond the confines of academia.
The final course content tied together skills such as interviewing, editing audio and video content, research and writing, web page design, social media promotion, and photography. Each module presented challenges and opportunities for growth, stimulating critical thinking, and creative expression. Delving into these areas has broadened my perspective and equipped me with a better understanding of digital audio and video production, which I lacked previously. I obtained my Mass Communications degree, specializing in journalism, back in 2001, before the digital boom. These skills are integral these days to be successful in journalism, especially in the freelance realm. I can now leverage these skills in both personal and professional contexts. My website Angle Authentic is an all-original polished professional portfolio that showcases my work proudly. My website will allow me to use it to look for gainful employment and freelance writing jobs.
One of the most significant takeaways from this course was the importance of research and keeping the writing fact based and not opinionated. My final project, “After Baltimore's Gray Skies Cleared: A Look at West Baltimore Since the Death of Freddie Gray” showcased this. It showcased all the valuable skills I previously mentioned. Whether it was through in person or zoom interviews, thought-provoking or insightful research and visiting places and events, I've learned how to tell a complete journalistic story. This newfound knowledge not only enhances my academic knowledge but also empowers me to make informed fact-based work and contribute meaningfully to world of journalism.
Looking ahead I will be applying these learnings in various aspects of my life. Professionally, I plan to integrate my digital video work into politics down the road. Whether working or volunteering for a candidate I believe in, I can produce digital content for them. The ultimately when I do run for congress, be able to produce my own content that will cut down on the cost of paying someone else to. Being that I will be new to politics fundraising will be harder and I will not have to focus as much funds to producing campaign ad and materials by doing it myself.
On a personal level, the lessons learned from this course have sparked a newfound curiosity and appreciation for people in general. I truly enjoy interview people. I want to move my journalism to interviews with all different types of people I find interesting. Whether it's exploring new hobbies, engaging in community initiatives, everyday heroes, or famous people, I'm committed to telling their stories.
This course and program have been a transformative experience that has not only met my original objectives but also enriched my life in countless ways. In this final course I utilized my skills, methods, mission, experiences and knowledge gained throughout the program by bringing them together for a final project that was cohesive, comprehensive that zero in on one subject. As I embark on the next chapter of my journey, I carry with me a deeper understanding of New Media Journalism and a renewed sense of purpose and pride.
